The Summer/Fall semester of The HomeSchool Chess Club is set & ready to begin on August 5th! For those of you who have registered, an email will be sent to you soon, informing you of all the things you'll need to know for your child to take full advantage of The HomeSchool Chess Club and all it has to offer. Once received, you will want to save or archive this email in a place you can easily refer back to it.
Whether or not you live in the Phoenix/Metro area, your child can still be a part of the club, being as that the teaching & learning portion of the program as well as the weekly tournaments are provided online! If you teach your child at home, or if your child doesn't have access to a local school chess club, enroll them in The HomeSchool Chess Club asap! You'll find it provides a wonderful environment & community for your young one to learn & grow in this time-honored game. There is still space remaining in The First One Hundred, which comes with special perks!
Every week during the semester there will be two physical meetups held in the Phoenix/Metro area - one in the Northeast region of the valley and another in the Southwest (specific times and locations will be announced in the email). If you don't live in the area or can't make it to the meetups, online meetups are also held every week, in which your child can still practice and play against other HSCC students.
If your child doesn't already have a physical chess board & set to practice and play on, please get them one as soon as possible. They will need this to practice the things taught throughout the week. If you would like a tournament-style chess set for your family (which I highly recommend), you can purchase one here on the website in an assortment of colors.
The beauty of The HomeSchool Chess Club is the fact your child will be exposed to chess nearly every day of the week. On Mondays & Fridays your child will receive instruction and review through pre-recorded lessons by a seasoned scholastic, working, professional chess coach. On Tuesdays & Thursdays I will actually be streaming live, right into your homes, going over the concepts introduced at the beginning of the week. During mid-week, your child will have an opportunity to
meetup with other HSCC members and practice what they've learned - whether in person or online. On the weekends your child can compete in The HomeSchool Chess Club Online Tournament Circuit to win prizes and trophies. Truly, a great experience for any child who has a desire to learn and grow in the study of chess.
In the meantime, if your child is already registered for the first semester of The HSCC, they should be able to access Lesson One it its entirety on The HomeSchool Chess Club's YouTube Channel. Please have them watch this lesson as many times as possible in between now and the beginning of the semester. At the very least, they should be viewing this lesson once a week to help them become familiar with the names of the chess pieces and how they move. This will also help them learn & master more quickly the rest of the lessons to come.
Needless to say, I'm very excited to work with each and every one of your children. By far, chess is one the the greatest activities to involve your child, and one of the only activities that actually improve your child's critical-thinking skills, which is... well... critical! One study revealed that kids who play chess regularly have an annual increase of 17.3% in critical-thinking test scores, while kids who don't play show no increase at all. Critical-thinking skills are like the proverbial statement about muscles - "if you don't use them, you lose them." So, I say again, if you haven't registered your child for The HomeSchool Chess Club Summer/Fall semester, please do so as soon as possible. If you need help with the registration process, please give me a call or send me an email and I will be glad to help you.
Thank you for allowing me the honor & privilege of sharing chess with your family.
